A new-build central support facility (CSF), providing c. 2,000sqm of dedicated facilities for day-to-day logistics, deliveries and engineering-related operations.
Culham, Oxfordshire
UKAEA
Extension to UKAEA’s existing materials research facility (MRF) to double the capacity for processing and micro-characterisation of special materials, and to enable air-lock truck deliveries to operational areas.
The MRF enables the scientific study of materials on a nano level to corroborate computer models and simulations of material properties and houses a number of high precision scientific instruments.
The new space doubles the capacity of the unique facility and provides additional office spaces, laboratory spaces, workshops, break out areas, meeting rooms, and clean areas, along with specialist air handling plant and chillers.
The MRF extension accommodates upgraded facilities in the ‘active area’ that include fusion line, active workshop, health physics office, hot-cell lines, research room, active storage, active ventilation systems including filter rooms, dedicated airlock and truck access and chemical lab and change area.
In terms of the facility’s ‘non-active area’, the upgraded facilities include staff room, project room, toilets, offices, meeting and break out rooms, kitchen, showers, change area, lobby and reception, control room, prep lab, store room, plant room and storage.
The building uses passive design measures to reduce the total energy demand, whilst providing modern office accommodation alongside specialist lab and research facilities.
