Environmental Responsibility

Doing the right thing, the right way

We recognise the urgent need to address climate change and resource depletion across the built environment. As a multidisciplinary consultancy operating globally, we are committed to reducing our environmental impact while supporting clients in delivering low-carbon, resilient and sustainable projects.

Carbon reduction plan

McBains is committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050 for our UK operations. Our Carbon Reduction Plan, completed in accordance with PPN 006 and signed off by our Board of Directors, sets out our organisational carbon footprint and structured reduction pathway.

Emissions are measured and reported in accordance with the GHG Reporting Protocol Corporate Standard, covering:

  • Scope 1: direct emissions from our operations
  • Scope 2: energy consumption across our offices
  • The required subset of Scope 3 emissions, reported in accordance with the PPN 006 reporting standard and the GHG Corporate Value Chain Standard

Our reduction measures include transitioning to lower-carbon office premises, hybrid working, low-carbon travel practices, energy efficiency improvements and embedding carbon awareness into project delivery. Our Carbon Reduction Plan is reviewed and updated annually, approved by our Board of Directors, and published below in line with UK Government procurement requirements.

Environmental management (ISO 14001)

Our environmental management system is certified to ISO 14001, demonstrating a systematic approach to managing environmental responsibilities across our operations and projects.

This accreditation ensures:

  • Compliance with environmental legislation and regulations
  • Ongoing risk assessment and environmental impact reduction
  • Continuous performance monitoring and improvement
  • Integration of environmental considerations into decision-making

Supporting sustainable projects

Alongside managing our own environmental impact, McBains supports clients in delivering projects that contribute to a lower-carbon built environment.

Across our disciplines we assist with:

  • Building performance modelling and energy analysis
  • Lifecycle cost and carbon assessment
  • Retrofit and building improvement strategies
  • Sustainable materials and resource efficiency

We also support the delivery of recognised environmental standards, including BREEAM and WELL certification, where appropriate.

Environmental & social responsibility

Environmental performance is closely linked with wider social outcomes. Many sustainability initiatives, including energy efficiency improvements, retrofit and responsible material choices, contribute to healthier environments and more resilient communities.

These themes form part of our broader commitment to responsible development.

Looking ahead

Responsibility is not a static commitment; it's a continuous journey. We remain focused on strengthening our environmental performance while supporting clients in delivering projects that respond to the challenges of climate change, resource use and long-term resilience.

Through collaboration, technical expertise and continuous improvement, McBains continues to contribute to a built environment that performs better for people, communities and the environment.
