Merton Council
Merton Council has 28 community primary schools, 4 community special schools (including pupil referral unit) and sixth form buildings for 3 secondary schools, for which it has a capital maintenance responsibility.
McBains has supported the council since 2021 with the management of their school capital maintenance programme. The programme of work includes external repairs, replacement roofs, boilers, windows and boiler refurbishments, in addition to internal refurbishments such as replacement of washrooms and fire safety improvements. We have also delivered adaptation schemes to suit the changing requirements of schools within the borough such as the provision of alternative resource provisions (ARP).
Our team of experts was instructed to attend sites and review specific items of repair where issues had been raised to the council by the schools. Where needed, the scope expanded due to other contributing issues / defects being identified by our team.
Where the client's requirement was to develop adaptation projects, we attended site to understand the end-user's requirements before developing proposals for comment by all parties involved, before taking forward projects such as the new ARP units within primary schools.
Due to the wide range of works required, we had to develop tender documents based on works taking place during term time whilst ensuring that the safety of pupils and staff remained assured. This has been achieved by developing detailed site logistics plans, identifying the specific needs of each school at the outset so that the safeguarding of pupils can be ensured through thorough vetting of contractors and their workforce.
