Delivering new, state-of-the art training facilities, the project included an entirely new, three-storey building with two rehearsal suites, four new full height (5m) dance and acting studios (with sprung floors to prevent injuries), additional classrooms, a much larger and better equipped gym, a brand new communal space connecting the old and new buildings and the “Green Roof” - a wonderfully versatile terrace and studio on the top floor. 

With careful phasing to ease funding and delivery pressures, whilst facilitating uninterrupted operation, works comprised a partial demolition, alteration and refurbishment of selected retained areas as well as the new build extension. 

With economic and environmental sustainability in mind, careful consideration was given to proposals which minimised alterations of the existing building, maximising its potential with only localised interventions. 

Key to the project, for both the new teaching spaces and the buildings directly facing the site, was the delivery of a new high-performance façade able to minimise acoustic transmission and energy consumption.

The project was announced as a Civic Trust Award winner in 2023 and was shortlisted in two categories of the 2022 New London Architecture Awards; for education and for retrofit.
