McBains appointed to deliver Sussex Cancer Centre

University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (UHSussex) has appointed McBains to provide project management and cost management services for the delivery of its new regional Centre of Excellence for cancer care.

The new Sussex Cancer Centre, which recently secured a quarter-of-a-billion-pound investment as part of the Government’s revised New Hospital Programme, will deliver modern, state-of-the-art facilities and benefit up to 60,000 patients every year.

Due to be built on the site of the former Barry Building – which until its recent demolition was the oldest hospital building in the country - the new centre is set to catapult cancer care in Sussex into the 21st century, with high-precision radiotherapy, expanded outpatient clinics, dedicated assessment areas, specialist day-unit, and daylight-flooded wards.

The new five-storey facility will more than triple the tertiary hospital’s clinical space dedicated to cancer care, whilst integrating dedicated research and innovation areas that facilitate expanded clinical trials and scientific breakthroughs.

Steve Brooker, Director at McBains, commented: “The new Sussex Cancer Centre will benefit thousands of patients and their families by increasing regional capacity and delivering new technology that significantly improves services and integrates research into everyday operations”.

The Sussex Cancer Centre is the second phase of UHSussex’s ambitious, three-stage 3Ts Redevelopment set to modernise the Royal Sussex County Hospital (RSCH) in Brighton. The first stage, the Louisa Martindale Building, opened in 2023.

As part of the second stage, a new landscaped plaza will be created between the Louisa Martindale Building and the new Sussex Cancer Centre to provide a peaceful sanctuary for patients, families and staff, that connects the two developments into a unified, modern healthcare campus.

The third and final stage of the 3Ts Redevelopment will see the construction of a new service and logistics yard on the site of the current cancer department to improve campus-wide efficiency.

McBains previously delivered project management, cost management and NEC supervision services for the 3Ts Stage 1 project (Louisa Martindale Building), as well as to the site enabling works for the Stage 2 (Sussex Cancer Centre) project.

Hemant Sharma, Associate Director at McBains, said: “We’re thrilled to be continuing our involvement with the 3Ts Redevelopment. Having successfully delivered UHSussex’s Louisa Martindale Building, we’ve already witnessed first-hand how new, modern healthcare facilities can truly transform patient experiences and staff wellbeing”.
