A school redevelopment project, cost managed by McBains, has been announced as a 2023 Civic Trust Award winner.
The project at ArtsEd comprises a combination of upgrade works to existing buildings and the construction of 2,875 square metres of new facilities, to improve the cohesion of a formerly disparate campus on a tight, urban site.
The scheme provides a series of communal and breakout spaces, two full size rehearsal rooms, a suite of classrooms and four full height (5m) dance studios, complete with sprung floors. The new building is crowned by a small studio that opens onto a beautifully planted roof-top terrace.
ArtsEd combines an independent performing arts school for 11–18 year olds with a degree school that offers world-leading vocational training in acting and musical theatre. The school's president is Lord Lloyd Webber, whilst alumni include Lashana Lynch, Simone Ashley, Danny Mac and, less recently, Dame Angela Lansbury.
The Civic Trust Awards recognise schemes which demonstrate excellence in architecture or design, whilst being sustainable, accessible and providing a positive civic contribution.
