Following the relocation of services from the Barry Building to the new Louisa Martindale Building at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton last year, demolition of the Barry Building’s external structure has now commenced; paving the way for the hospital’s new cancer centre.
Until its closure in June 2023, the Barry Building had been the oldest operational building in NHS England, having originally opened its doors in 1828. Its demolition and subsequent redevelopment of the site represent Stage 2 of the Royal Sussex County Hospital’s ambitious, three-stage modernisation programme supporting trauma, teaching, and tertiary (3Ts) services in Sussex.
Due for completion in 2028, the new Sussex Cancer Centre is set to provide modern state-of-the-art facilities for the hospital’s radiotherapy, oncology and haematology departments.
Having been involved with the successful completion of Stage 1, which delivered 63,000 square metres of clinical and support accommodation in the new Louisa Martindale Building, McBains continues to support the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust by providing construction supervision, cost management and project management services to Stages 2 and 3 of the project.
