The new Medical Assessment Unit (MAU) at the Royal Sussex County Hospital (RSCH) provides a dedicated area for same-day assessment and treatment of patients, helping to reduce pressure on the hospital’s Accident and Emergency (A&E) department.

Located on Level 5 of RSCH’s Millennium Building and within close proximity to the existing Surgical Assessment Unit, the scheme is part of a multi-million-pound transformation programme set to enhance patient flow, increase ED capacity, reduce waiting times, improve clinical service adjacencies and provide a more comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients, visitors and staff.

Featuring both a trolley assessment area and a chaired same day emergency care (SDEC) / hot clinic area, the MAU has capacity for 64 patients who might otherwise be in A&E.

Demolition work to create the MAU footprint completed in February 2024, with the construction of the new unit commencing in June 2024 and completing in October 2025.
