The construction of a new, purpose-built urgent treatment centre (UTC) at Worthing Hospital is part of multi-million-pound improvement programme to expand the hospital’s Emergency Department (ED).
Providing urgent medical help to people whose condition is not life-threatening, the new UTC is expected to treat 40,000 visitors annually.
The new, single storey facility includes a waiting area, eight consultation rooms, a dedicated paediatric waiting space, and clinical support facilities.

Located at the front of the hospital, closer to the ED, the new facility creates a new entrance for all urgent walk-in attendances.
Now that the new UTC is open, work will begin on the Same Day Emergency Care unit in the space vacated in the hospital’s East Wing by the former UTC.
With construction needing to be carried out within a live hospital environment, special measures were taken to minimise disruption, including safety protocols, clear communication and coordinated scheduling.
Activities were carefully scheduled to align with the hospital’s busiest periods and steps were taken to reduce noise and vibration to the nearby A&E, maternity, pre-natal ward and X-Ray areas.
Movement of materials and equipment across the hospital’s blue light route were carefully planned to avoid significant disruption.
McBains provided NEC supervisor (fabric and MEPH) services to the scheme.
