Catford Library Relocation

Lewisham Council

McBains was appointed to support Lewisham Council with the relocation of Catford Library from Laurence House to Catford Shopping Centre as part of a wider council regeneration scheme to improve public spaces, lighting and accessibility between Catford and Catford Bridge stations.

The new, modern library is more accessible and provides flexible spaces for community use, a new children’s section with homework areas and digital access, innovative pods for hybrid working and resources for job seekers.

McBains was tasked with the comprehensive design and specification to meet the client's requirements for a vibrant and inviting new library facility catering to the needs of the local community.

Spanning two floors, the library incorporates a community room on the first floor, rentable meeting rooms, offices, computer stations, as well as various work booths and seating areas.

The project involved the transformation of a defunct large retail unit within the Catford shopping precinct, formerly a Woolworths store, which had been repurposed as temporary storage for the council. McBains provided invaluable guidance by recommending an initial strip-out, enabling works, and asbestos removal to commence concurrently with the design and layout negotiations with all stakeholders. This approach maximized efficiency in the overall programme timeline.
