The fit-out and reconfiguration of a dual retail unit to create a new open plan Jobcentre Plus supporting over 30 staff, complete with secure back-office areas in a convenient location in the centre of Runcorn, close to the town’s former Jobcentre Plus location.
A new mezzanine level was added to accommodate offices, meeting rooms, welfare spaces and breakout areas.

The scheme fell within the second tranche of projects under the Batch 3 appointment of DWP’s Workplace Transformation Programme (WTP), with McBains being appointed in a full inter-disciplinary capacity from inception through to installation and handover.
As the units had been vacant for at least 10 years and because the two units were being combined, structural works were required to assure the structural integrity of the structure - since a wall was being removed - as well as to strengthen the mezzanine, design a new staircase and provide strengthening to the existing stairs, as well as plan for the introduction of a platform lift.
Externally, the building was upgraded with extensive shopfront works including fitting in new curtain walling glazing as some of the glazing had been missing for several years and new insulated panels as well as an accessible ramp. Internally, new partitioning, raised access floors, and both suspended and open ceilings with exposed services were introduced.
Bespoke joinery, sanitary facilities and acoustic treatments were also installed to create a high-quality environment for staff and customers.
Mechanical and electrical systems were fully modernised, incorporating new heat pumps, electrical distribution boards, ductwork and an energy efficient LED lighting scheme.
