Harlow Council
McBains, together with our Landscape partners Ares Landscape Architects, were appointed by Harlow Council to design an extensive upgrade to Broad Walk – a key retail access point to Harlow town centre.
The scheme has been developed in parallel with our designs for the Harlow Sustainable Transport Interchange and Hub and as an extension of those previously developed by McBains and Ares for Eastgate; where a new high-quality streetscape was introduced with urban greening, pedestrian-focused spaces and bespoke lighting.
The Broad Walk project is one of several town centre regeneration schemes for which McBains has been providing multidisciplinary services to Harlow Council (HC), with the objective of revitalising the town centre through public realm improvements and the introduction of a diverse mix of new retail, leisure, civic, office and residential uses.

4850sqm
high street
Our designs for Broad Walk will create a brighter, more welcoming town centre for shoppers and visitors, that will directly link to the town’s transport interchange and hub – Harlow’s new sustainable gateway.
The 4,850sqm linear high street will be transformed through improved arrival spaces, comprehensive repaving, green landscaping, new and upgraded street furniture - including seating, lighting, bins and CCTV – and a central SuDS feature with pedestrian bridges creating ‘breathing spaces’ and zones for seating and congregation.
The scheme will provide a large flexible, central space for informal pop-up markets, fun fairs and seasonal events, whilst introducing opportunities for cafe culture, external dining and night-time economy activation.
