University of Westminster

Contemporary interior space of a university campus featuring a central wooden column with a circular light fixture above it. The area has exposed ductwork on the ceiling, grey flooring, and full-height glass partitions that provide views into adjacent rooms and workspaces.

McBains coordinated all stages of design, procurement and construction delivery for two, interlinked, strategic re-fitting and re-stacking projects; the first being a new games hub and emerging media studio, and the second a new photography darkroom and studio space.

At the project outset, we worked closely with the client, stakeholders, and the design team to define the strategic objectives of the programme, to assess the project budget and project programmes, and to align these with the University’s business case and funding approval procedures. Working closely with all stakeholders, we were able to develop a fresh brief which facilitated the new learning spaces and fulfilled the end user requirements.

New Games Hub & Emerging Media Studio: Re-configuration of an existing library to provide a 40-seater Games-Hub Studio, integrated with the Emerging Media Space. Combined, this will enable the University to offer a new education programme providing teaching and research into cutting-edge gaming art technology. Our brief included selection of specialist furniture, graphic and exhibition wall-spaces, and all interior design. The project required the relocation of the existing library, an asset crucial to the ongoing activities of the University, and this was achieved with minimum closure time through a series of targeted stakeholder engagement meetings.

Photography Studio & Darkroom Spaces: By re-configurating existing teaching and darkroom spaces, and enhancing the existing thermal performance, a welcoming, new innovative darkroom space was created, offering tuition in both traditional and modern photography techniques through cooperative, authentic, and unique hands-on learning. The new open-plan studio space helped create an exciting and spacious working environment which encourages greater collaborative working amongst students.
