Sussex Cancer Centre given green light by planners
The modern, purpose-built centre is set to increase current capacity for cancer care three-fold, with significantly more treatments in outpatient settings, an increase in the number of inpatient beds (all in single en-suite rooms), and provision of a new and dedicated acute cancer assessment unit.
Once completed, the centre will act as a hub for the new Sussex Cancer Research Centre partnership, enabling it to play a vital role in cancer research and innovation; accelerating the development of new therapies and improving diagnostic tools.
The design of the five-storey building focuses on a holistic approach to patient care; optimising treatment delivery whilst creating a healing environment that supports the emotional and psychological wellbeing of patients through spaces filled with natural light and views of the sea / green areas, and access to peaceful gardens and terraces.
Steve Brooker, Director at McBains, commented: “We’re incredibly proud to be involved in the delivery of a facility that will make a real difference to cancer care and treatment across the region.
“Securing planning permission is a significant milestone for the new Sussex Cancer Centre and reflects the strong collaboration between all parties involved in this incredible project”.
Assigned to Wave 1 of the Government’s revised New Hospitals Programme, construction of the Sussex Cancer Centre is expected to begin in 2026, with the centre scheduled to open for patients in 2029.
McBains is providing project management and cost management services to University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust for the new Sussex Cancer Centre, having successfully worked with the Trust to deliver the Louisa Martindale Building (Stage 1 of the 3Ts redevelopment).
